As part of Milan Design Week 2015, United Nude and 3D Systems have asked five architects/designers, including Ben van Berkel and Zaha Hadid, to "re-invent shoes" using 3D printing technology.
UNStudio founder Ben van Berkel describes the curving shoe with vertical ribbons as "hoof-like," where the shoe "elongate[s] the legs and create an almost animal-like extension." Although it may not appear so, "they are very easy to walk in," van Berkel told Dezeen. "We made a strong construction inside the shoe so that whenever you walk on it you feel stable."
The shoe is called UNX2 and is part of the exhibition "Re-Inventing Shoes" at the Teatro Arsenale in Milan, where Fernando Romero, Michael Young, Ross Lovegrove and Zaha Hadid "push[ed] the boundaries of shoe design with the latest materials and most advanced 3D printing technology." The shoes are made from hard nylon and soft rubber with the SNS (Selective Laser Sintering) technique, in which United Nude contends they have "figured out a way to combine harder and softer 3D printed parts for creating fully functioning shoes."
Sneak preview of UNStudio's UNX2 - A new shoe design for UNITED NUDE and 3D-SYSTEMS will be unveiled in the exhibition 'Re-Inventing Shoes' in Teatro Arsenale, Via C. Correnti 11, Milan.
