The Fundació Mies van der Rohe has announced that "Anna Bofill Levi. La arquitectura como contracanto: 1977-1996" by a quartet of Spanish architects is the recipient of the latest Lilly Reich Grant for Equality in Architecture.
According to the announcement made on October 3, World Architecture Day, the research project by architects Ma Elia Gutiérrez Mozo, José Parra Martínez, Ana Gilsanz Díaz, and Joaquín Arnau Amo aims to study "the architectural works designed and directed by Anna Bofill alone" in order to "put them both in value and in relation to the rest of her intense work."
Anna Bofill is an architect and composer, as well as the sister of the late, famed architect Ricardo Bofill. With Anna Bofill as the subject of the research project, this is the first time the Lilly Reich Grant will not be focused on the work of Lilly Reich, the German designer who was Mies van der Rohe's "artistic partner in the conception and execution" of the German Pavilion in the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition.
Architects Laura Lizondo Sevilla, Débora Domingo Calabuig, and Avelina Prat García won the second grant in 2020 for the documentary film [On Set with] Lilly Reich.
The jury, made up of Zaida Muxí, Aaron Betsky, and Débora Domingo Calabuig, said in a statement about the 3rd grant:
"The proposal will address the invisibilization of women working in teams and will make a local figure known to an international audience, offering a comprehensive view of the work and figure of Anna Bofill Levi. It is a clearly defined project, with the unique twist of trying to weave a production of architecture, music, writing and management thanks to a transdisciplinary academic study of four researchers, mostly in architecture but with one of them with a very experienced background in musicology."
"Anna Bofill Levi. La arquitectura como contracanto: 1977-1996" was selected from twelve proposals received from the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, Chile, Australia, Costa Rica, Italy, and the United States.
