The Shed, part of the huge Hudson Yards development in New York that bills itself as the city's "new center for artistic invention," has released a fly-through animation of the Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) design now under construction.
As the screenshot above reveals, The Shed sits just a few feet from the High Line, the popular elevated park that DS+R designed with James Corner Field Operations. The most striking aspect of The Shed is the massive, four-sided enclosure that wraps the "fixed building" and slides on rails to cover the adjacent plaza. The animation illustrates how the large space can be used for art displays, concerts and other performances, and how the retractable walls allow The Shed to open or close itself off from the adjacent Hudson Yards development.
The "radically flexible," 200,000-square-foot, six-level structure designed by DS+R in collaboration with Rockwell Group will open in spring 2019.
