International 2013 Piranesi Award

The recipients of the 25th Piranesi Awards were announced last week at the conclusion of the Piran Days of Architecture in Slovenia. From the 40 nominated projects culled from 8 countries in the Alpe Adria region and Central Europe, the Piranesi Award was given to Ring Road Bressanone-Varne in Bolzano, Italy, designed by Sandy Attia and Matteo Scagnol of MoDus Architects.

The project is made up of a series of interventions along the roadway's 5-kilometer (3-mile) length, including tunnel portals, retaining walls, acoustic barrier walls, and ventilation chimneys. For reference, the latter's Y-shaped above-ground portion pictured here is only about one-fifth of the chimney's height as it reaches from tunnel to sky.
