Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) has announced that photographer Gerry Padden is the winner of the #WelcomeOneWTC photo contest that SOM held to celebrate the opening of One World Trade Center.
The photo, taken from a Brooklyn rooftop this summer, follows Padden's philosophy of "always aiming to capture a special moment that is naturally occurring." The setting sun illuminates a gap that will be occupied someday by Norman Foster's 2 WTC and Richard Rogers' 3 WTC; Fumihiko Maki's 4 WTC is visible to the left of the gap, while Frank Gehry's 8 Spruce Street can be seen to the right of the Brooklyn Bridge. SOM's 1 WTC is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and therefore New York City as well, where it is seen as a symbol of the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan.
Padden bested close to 350 entries that were submitted between 3 November and 3 December 2014. He receives a model of 1 WTC crafted by the New York office of SOM and a fine art print of the building photographed by James Ewing.
