Wadden Sea Centre and the city of Esbjerg have announced Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter's proposal as the winning scheme for the extension and refurbishment of the Wadden Sea Centre in Vester Vedsted, Denmark.
Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter's design interprets the local building tradition, particularly rural farmhouses, by covering the walls and roofs of the 1,000-sm (10,750-sf) building with thatching. This approach pleased Esbjerg Mayor Johnny Søttrup, the head of the selection committee, who said, "It has been of great importance that the architecture is in harmony with the vast, horizontal landscape of the marsh as well as being significant and one of a kind."

Located in Wadden Sea, Denmark's largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the project is expected to be complete in July 2016.
