Renderings have been released for Studio Gang Architects' design of a 40-story tower at 160 Folsom Street in San Francisco for developer Tishman Speyer.
Per an article by John King at SFGate, where the news broke, Gang's design for the tower that was announced in March is "a rippled, 400-foot shaft that is [the] Chicago architect's reinterpretation of the city's fabled bay windows." Naturally, the rippling design draws parallels with Studio Gang Architects' Aqua Tower in Chicago, partly because it's their only built tower to date, but mainly because the variation of one floor plan to the next (in lieu of an extruded plan) is paramount. The turning bay windows and balconies are guaranteed to give the various units a multitude of views around the Embarcadero site.
Approval for the building is still to come, pending reviews of the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors, since the building is 100 feet higher than allowed under current zoning. Nevertheless, the developer is optimistically setting a target completion date of 2016.
