Townhouse Auberg

 Back to Projects list
Location
Linz, Austria
Year
2016

This house resembles a well-dressed, elegantly moving, fine elderly lady. Grey hair, hardly any jewellery, subtle make up. Connoisseurs however will note the beautiful lady from afar; despite – or rather because - of her discretion.

Built in the 1930s, prime location of Linz, within walking distance from the city centre; for this true architectural gem, it was all about fulfilling highest demands regarding quality and elegance.
Every bit and piece of substance and patina worth maintaining was saved, and wherever it seemed sensible we acted resolutely. A preservative approach didn’t seem indicated here, but rather a laid-back handling of precious, sensual building structure.

Both the needs of the future inhabitants (a young family) and structural-physical requirements had to be met. To give but a few examples, on the exterior new wooden window frames from oak were inserted and a thin layer of insulation – covered with rough plaster – was applied.
The whole renovation was only possible in close cooperation with the builder-owners. Every decision had to be fathomed between comfort, aesthetics, patina, expenses (also operational) and building physics.
