The west of Munich is now home to a new cultural centre: the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk, a former heating power plant from the 1930s, which brings together art, music, and gastronomy across an impressive area of nearly 20,000 m² to create a unique experience. With innovative construction and design solutions, the Lindner Group has played a key role in transforming the industrial building, which had been vacant since 1988, into a vibrant cultural hub. In doing so, they successfully integrated heritage protection, fire safety, and acoustics into a modern, aesthetically pleasing overall concept.
Elektra Tonquartier: A Concert Hall of Excellence
The centrepiece of the transformation is the "Elektra Tonquartier" concert hall, which opened in October 2024. This state-of-the-art venue offers 478 visitors an extraordinary sound experience, thanks to an immersive surround sound system. Real-time signal processing and optimally positioned speakers allow for the reproduction of various music genres with the highest precision – a tribute to the diversity of musical expression.
For optimal sightlines and proximity to the stage, tiered seating was implemented using the FLOOR and more® arena hollow floor system. This system, with supports of varying heights, is specifically designed for the acoustic and safety requirements of concert halls, and meets the highest fire protection and acoustic standards with its non-combustible calcium sulphate panels (building material class A1). The high degree of prefabrication also enabled swift and efficient installation.
Acoustics and Safety: Perfectly Integrated
To optimise the acoustics of the concert hall, custom-made wall sound absorbers were used, combining aesthetic appeal with excellent sound absorption while meeting the strict fire protection requirements of building material class B1. The concept is further enhanced by durable and resource-efficient COMPlacq acoustic wall panels made from perforated aluminium sheet.
The foyer was also furnished with solutions from Lindner: A microperforated wall cladding combines the warm appearance of real wood with the safety of non-combustible materials (building material class A2).
Preserving Industrial Heritage
Special attention was given to preserving the historical architecture of the former boiler hall. A cladding material made from 3 mm thick waxed steel was used here to perfectly complement the industrial aesthetic of the old boilers, which remain in their original location. Today, this striking space, with its historical industrial charm, provides an exceptional backdrop for exhibitions and events.
A Place of Encounter and Innovation
In addition to the architectural design, Lindner also contributed to the furnishings of the communal areas. Custom-made furniture, including upholstered seating and tailored wardrobe and counter solutions, creates a comfortable and inviting atmosphere in the restaurant and lounge areas.
The Bergson Kunstkraftwerk is more than just a venue; it is a lively meeting point where history and modernity merge. With their expertise, Lindner Group has created a multifunctional cultural centre that honours the past while shaping the future with a visionary approach—a milestone for Munich’s cultural landscape.
