The Niederösterreichische Landes-Heil- und Pflegeanstalt für Nerven- und Geisteskranke »Am Steinhof« (Lower Austrian State Healing and Care Institution for the neurologically and mentally ill, »Am Steinhof») is one of the most sensible Viennese sites in terms of heritage and contemporary reuse.
The transformation from an introverted site with introverted buildings into an open spatial experience that fosters collaboration and interaction between all stakeholders requires a melange of design in a respectful concordance and at the same time deliberate contradiction with the protected heritage.
The proposal follows a set of principles both on the scale of the masterplan and the scale of the prototype pavilion for academic teaching: Designing with the existing context, not against it, creating a leitmotif inspired by the context to distinguish the Core Area of CEU and changes to the historical buildings have to be reversible.
