For this new row of townhouses in the West Village of Manhattan, we re-evaluated the classic building typology and worked to balance public street front presence with the residents’ need for privacy. Together the three buildings form a cohesive assemblage, while differences in the window arrangements and entry conditions express the individual identity of each. These exterior variations reflect the unique features such as an indoor parking garage, double height living space, and expansive rear yard. The modern design relates to the surrounding historical townhouses by employing a similar scale and vocabulary. Subtle manipulations of the façade’s stone surface and gradual shifts of color establish a refined and distinguished presence in the neighborhood.
