The design for the residential development is based on two local boundary conditions: first, the scenic and imposing forest edge in the south and, secondly, the typical Wolfsburg mixture of different types of housing developments that surround the site. Densely built, terraced "green living" is proposed in the form of a "patchwork" of different types of housing (and therefore users), different public and neighbourhood spaces at various heights and a rhythmic mix of buildings and vegetation. The different typologies represent a "Wolfsburg Remix", i.e. a "new release" of courtyard apartments, apartment blocks, residential towers, detached houses, and terraced houses. This mixture includes housing types that allow for commuters and business students to a live near the forest and in a neighbourhood community.
The Patchwork fits into the surrounding development pattern and creates a differentiated living environment that can easily become a community and a home through the variety of different open spaces and local pathways. The car-free “neighbourhood street” on the middle terrace forms the internal social backbone of the development. Additionally, in the centre of the site is a sequence of large public lawns, which also serve towards storm water management. They form a natural focal point in the district Hellwinkel and enable large spatial throughway from the forest and fields in the south to the canal and the Aller lake in the north.
