Locomotive Shed in Marburg

Moving Transformation
The former locomotive shed in Marburg was left to decay for decades. In 2017, entrepreneur Gunter Schneider recognised the potential of the semi-circular brick architecture. His vision: the industrial monument was to be transformed into a special centre for culture and encounters. In the planning stage brandherm + krumrey were commissioned with the design of the gastronomic venues. Owing to the history of the locomotive shed, the design idea quickly emerged: the interior design was to artfully reflect the special nature of the location.

The new gastronomic area is divided into three units. An à la carte restaurant, a deli and a bar. The design of these areas is inspired by the old rail tracks that lead to the locomotive shed and have been overgrown by greenery over the years. The linear alignment of the disused railway tracks is now intersected and complemented by new lines of the new wooden floors. Where old and new lines intersect, “crossing points” were created – open constructions made of steel profiles. Sprawling plants “grow” from these steel structures. Large green plants distributed across the hall areas complement these “showcases od growth” and create a homely ambience.

The colour and material concept also takes its cue from the historical building. Light green shades or dark, earthy colours contrast with the red brick walls. Bright colourful tables and chairs add vibrant highlights that stand out against the overall ambience of the interior with its many wood and stone surfaces. Another striking feature is the large luminaires with an acoustically effective textile structure that float above the gastronomic areas. In stark contrast to their lightness are the steel walkways of the upper gallery level.

Simple wooden chairs, bar stools or lounge furniture provide casual seating in the deli and at the bar. The relaxed, elegant ambience is further enhanced by patterned floor tiles and a large wall panel with an abstract, organically flowing motif. The combination of old and new has created an extraordinary place whose charm is the result of a design concept that is as independent as it relates to the existing building.
