The SOS Children's Village, which opened in autumn 2021, will support children and families with even more space and offers in the future - the construction of the “Port for Families” on Straßburger Platz in Hamburg Dulsberg has been completed.
CARSTEN ROTH ARCHITEKT planned and realized the new building, in which children’s village families will find a new home and Hamburg residents will find another place of encounter, education and support. In addition to apartments for families with children in the village, a new family center was also planned on a plot of around 1,000 m2. This public area includes a family café, a children's clothing store and several course rooms. The apartments of the SOS Children's Village are located in the back of the “Port for Families”. The structure fits in along Straßburger Platz and Weißenburger Straße.
The building itself is divided into three parts: The three upper floors in the northern part of the building and the four upper floors opposite the church end at the level of the neighboring residential buildings. So that the landmark of the Dulsberg Frohbotschaftskirche, the church tower, can act as a visual axis and reference point for the Dulsbergers, the connecting building is single-storey in the middle. The varying facade of the building is scaled according to its use. The facade itself is a terracotta facade made of baked clay, which takes on the brick color of the buildings in the vicinity. On the ground floor of the main entrance facing Straßburger Straße, the building offers more space for a large family café and several course rooms.
