Underground and Bus Station Bensberg
Bergisch Gladbach, Germany
The underground streetcar and bus station Bensberg is situated at a depth of 14 meters below street level. The station comprises three underground and two overground levels, making it a compact yet complex building that offers vertical direct connections between traffic patterns that unite light rail and bus service with car access.
For the outer walls of the station the rounded profile of the tunnel formwork was retained. By continuing the wall into the adjacent suspended round perforated metal ceiling, the station obtained the character of a generous, shallow arched and column-free hall. Above the perforated metal ceiling blue tinted light is radiated sideways through the glass to emphasize the artificial, technical character of this underground space.
