Although Herzog & de Meuron's Elbphilharmonie won't open fully until 11 and 12 January 2017, the City of Hamburg recently took delivery of the building after nearly ten years of construction, while the Elbphilharmonie Plaza – a public viewing platform situated between the former warehouse and the new glass structure – opens to the public this weekend.
Along with these major milestones are a crop of photos by Iwan Baan, ten of them featured here – from FERTIG painted in light across the facade to mark the completion of the building, to the interior spaces and the Plaza with its panoramic views over Hamburg. Herzog & de Meuron said of the Plaza upon its opening: "[We] wanted to create a place for everyone with a unique panorama: the outward-looking design of the spacious terrace, sprawling on the warehouse like a new public square, counterbalances the inward focus of the philharmonic hall above it."
