Robbrecht en Daem / Dierendonckblancke Win VRT Competition

A team consisting of Robbrecht en Daem, Dierendonckblancke Architecten, VK and Arup, in collaboration with Bureau Bas Smets, Muller Van Severen and Grontmij, has been selected to design the new media building for VRT, the Flemish Radio and Television Broadcasting Company in Brussels.
The team led by Robbrecht en Daem and Dierendonckblancke – both from Gent, Belgium – beat out four other finalists in the open-call competition: the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), Rotterdam; Christian Kerez, Zurich; a consortium of evr, Doorzon, Denis Dujardin and vylder vinck taillieu, all from Belgium; and Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen, Brussels, with KCAP, Rotterdam.
The winning scheme responds to its park setting by splitting the building into two volumes – the 'Head' and the 'Body' – and using the connector as a "a multifunctional pedestrian passage." The exterior of the office building will be clad in "a crystalline skin of structured glass and brass-coloured anodized aluminium frames."
