Seattle's NBBJ is designing Google's 1.1-million-square-foot "Bay View" complex in Mountain View, California.
Following on the heels of Apple, Facebook, and other tech companies in California's Silicon Valley, Google is undertaking the design and construction of a new headquarters. "Bay View" is the name of the campus that will be located near its current Mountain View home base, which is made up of more than 60 buildings Google has retrofitted. For the new, 9-building campus they are working with Seattle's NBBJ on a plan where "no employee in the 1.1-million-square-foot complex will be more than a two-and-a-half-minute walk from any other," per Paul Goldberger's discussion with David Radcliffe, a civil engineer working with Google. Goldberger's article at Vanity Fair also details in these preliminary stages of the project how the campus will have "a mix of private, quiet work spaces ... and social and communal work spaces," cafés, relaxed and casual interiors, and green roofs that will be part of a larger goal of conserving energy.
