NOWNESS, in the latest installment of its "Constructed Views" series, presents a profile of Etsuro Sotoo, the sculptor who left Japan in 1978 for Barcelona and has since devoted himself to the completion of Antoni Gaudí's Sagrada Familia.
Across six minutes, Stone Cut traces Sotoo's life, from his realization that he wanted to cut stone to being made the Chief Sculptor at Sagrada Familia in 2013 — via his conversion to Catholicism to "gain a deeper understanding of Gaudí’s genius." An archival image of Sotoo and another sculptor perched upon spindly scaffolding near the top of one of the spires is just one highlight of the short film.
