The State Government of Western Australia has unveiled the winning design for a pedestrian bridge traversing the Swan River to connect East Perth with the new Perth Stadium on Burswood Peninsula.
The $54.12 million steel cable-stay bridge was selected by an expert panel headed by bridge engineer and former Governor Ken Michael. The snakelike design is the product of a joint venture between Italian company Rizanni de Eccher and Australian company York Civil, which will also build the bridge in time for the start of the 2018 AFL season.
The footbridge is part of the planned infrastructure for the new Perth Stadium, which also includes the six-platform Stadium Station for making the peninsula highly accessible without a car. The 60,000-seat stadium is being designed by the team of Cox Architecture, Hassell, HKS and Arup, per a 2014 selection. As well, the stadium is planned to be complete by 2018.
