Just steps from the Grand Place in Brussels, “Îlot Sacré” has breathed new purpose into one of the rare remaining fallow pieces of land within the UNESCO world heritage perimeter in the Belgian capital. Our project is based upon the historical urban fabric, and recreates a pedestrian network that literally repairs the neighbourhood, while creating a pleasant semi-public square for the inhabitants. Traditional and sustainable construction materials are used. Architecture is sharp and contemporary, yet in a dynamic dialogue with the context, as the choice of construction materials, stylistic elements, colours, gauge, is rooted in the surrounding built heritage.
In light of the project’s residential function, the block’s interior has a quiet and intimate feeling. The lower part of the façade, next to which pedestrians stroll along the alleys, is composed of a regular superimposition of vertical windows that evokes Brussels architecture and underlines the equilibrium of the space. The top floor apartments are recessed and finished in dark grey slate. The gable-roofed volumes reflect the neighbourhood’s existing architecture at the same time maintaining a deliberately modern and individual character, which is accentuated by the free treatment of the window openings. They appear to be “freestanding rooftop houses”.
