New York's MoMA PS1 has announced that Mexico City's Pedro&Juana is winner of the 2019 Young Architects Program (YAP). The studio's Hórama Rama will be installed in the institution's courtyard this summer.
Today's announcement came three months after MoMA PS1 narrowed down the annual competition to five finalists from an initial list of around 50 young firms. Pedro&Juana bested Low Design Office, Matter Design, and Oana Stănescu & Akane Moriyama from the United States, and TO, also from Mexico City.
Pedro&Juana, founded by Ana Paula Ruiz Galindo and Mecky Reuss, came to our attention in Chicago: first at the Chicago Architecture Biennial in 2015, when they created an interactive "living room" at the Chicago Cultural Center; and then two years later at MCA Chicago, where they installed a ceiling of 221 lamps and planters as part of Johnston Marklee's renovation of the museum.
For Long Island City, Queens's MoMA PS1, Pedro&Juana will install a circular structure atop the courtyard's concrete walls. The inside face will display a panoramic graphic of vegetation that "will transform our concrete jungle into an immersive junglescape," per a tweet from MoMA PS1. The outside face will feature wood "bristles," while the surface of the courtyard will be littered with custom hammocks. Lastly, the required water feature will take the form of a waterfall, completing the installation's jungle theme.
