METRO GARDENS
architectureRED was commissioned to master plan and design the architecture for the 8.43 acre (approx. 900,000 sf) mixed use development opposite the proposed metro station in Koyambedu, Chennai. The brief was to create a residential community that is vibrant and pedestrian oriented. The proximity to the proposed metro station offers an opportunity to create an urban plaza along the main road which will not only serve as a gateway into the new community but also become a destination place. Locating a commercial building with ground floor retail adjacent to it activates the plaza.
The design approach was to create a strong framework of open space system, integrated with an efficient street network, resulting in a high-density development. The green space system is interwoven through the development to create a strong sense of community for the residents. The hierarchy of spaces also creates opportunity to create iconic buildings at key locations within the overall development.
