The team of Studio Weave and Architecture 00 has won an invited design competition to turn an old section of elevated railway in the London Borough of Camden into a temporary public park modeled on New Yorks' High Line.
The release of renderings that envision the nearly one-mile stretch of railway as a park follow the opening of Seoul's own version of the High Line by only a couple days. Linear parks fashioned after the highly successful park on Manhattan's West Side can now be found in Sydney (The Goods Line), Barcelona (Jardins de la Rambla de Sants), Chicago (The 606), Seoul and other cities around the world.
London's version, Camden Highline, is being spearheaded by Camden Town Unlimited, the area's business improvement district. They are working with Network Rail to make the park, which would connect Camden to King's Cross, a reality. The stretch of unused railway, built as part of the North London Line, crosses eight roads and would aim "to reduce overcrowding and journey times on the existing, cycling and pedestrian routes," according to Camden Town Unlimited's Simon Pitkeathley.
