Stirling Prize Shortlist Announced

Projects in the running for the Stirling Prize are culled from the winners of the annual RIBA Awards. The winner of RIBA's highest honor will go to one of these six buildings (RIBA Awards wins indicated in parentheses):

• Blavatnik School of Government by Herzog & de Meuron, Oxford, England (RIBA National Award 2016, RIBA South Award 2016, RIBA South Client of the Year 2016)
• City of Glasgow College, Riverside Campus by Michael Laird Architects, Reiach and Hall Architects, Glasgow, Scotland (RIBA National Award 2016, RIAS Award 2016, RIBA Award for Scotland 2016)
• Newport Street Gallery by Caruso St. John Architects, Vauxhall, London (RIBA National Award 2016, RIBA London Award 2016)
• Outhouse by Loyn & Co Architects, Forest of Dean, England (RIBA National Award 2016, RIBA South West Award 2016, RIBA South West Building of the Year 2016)
• Trafalgar Place - Elephant and Castle by dRMM Architects, London (RIBA National Award 2016, RIBA London Award 2016)
• Weston Library by WilkinsonEyre, Oxford, England (RIBA National Award 2016, RIBA South Award 2016, RIBA South Building of the Year 2016)

For the sake of geographical comparison, two of the projects are located in London and two are located in Oxford, while the other two buildings are located in Scotland and in England near the Welsh border. Typologically, three of the shortlisted projects are university buildings (two for the University of Oxford), one is an art gallery, one is a single-family residence, and one is a residential development. From the seven architects that worked on the six projects, only two previously won Stirling Prizes: Herzog & de Meuron for the Laban Centre in 2003 and Wilkinson Eyre for the MAGNA Science Centre in 2001 and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in 2002.

The winner of the 2016 RIBA Stirling Prize will be announced 6 October 2016.
