The Tampa Museum of Art has announced a $65 million expansion that is being designed by New York's WEISS/MANFREDI and will "enliven Tampa’s cultural scene and significantly alter the city skyline."
The November 8 announcement from the Florida institution indicates the three-story addition will add 51,000 square feet, doubling its space devoted to exhibitions, tripling its spaces for events, and more than tripling its educational spaces. The work by WEISS/MANFREDI Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism also includes the renovation of 25,000 square feet of the museum's existing 2010 building, the Cornelia Corbett Center, that was designed by Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects.

Conceived as a "glazed pier" by the architects, the addition aims to "provide an interconnected sequence of multi-functional spaces," both inside the museum and on the exterior, in its location adjacent to the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. As seen in the renderings released by the museum, the expansion will cantilever over a public space that connects to the park and is the city's riverwalk along the Hillsborough River. The project also involves outdoor spaces beyond the museum's footprint, including two new dog parks (an existing one is being taken by the expansion) and a new landscape access point along Cass Street on the north.
The $80 million project is expected to be completed in 2024.
